Hi! How are you doing with all the stress and strain of the holiday season.
I'm like everyone else, I feel the pinch of the holidays due to lack of funds.
I had two clients twice in the same week so that gave me a little extra money.
Enough to buy gas and keep my head above water.
We had a little get together this weekend and I added some more calories than usual so
I subtracted some and I should be ok. Last week I was two pounds over my normal weight and have lost one. It's funny, I keep a log of my weight and it was exactly the same last year. By January, I started to go down again. The key is watch what you eat and exercise! Don't starve yourself before a party or you'll eat too much!
Also exercise helps preserve your sanity during this crazy time of year. Cue the Bolton! Yuk!
Anyway, don't forget what the season is all about celebrating the birth of Jesus and Peace on Earth Goodwill to All.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Follow up on second skin cancer surgery/ you know you are getting old when you spend most of the day at the doctors!
Last Thursday we spent loads of time at the doctors. First, I had a routine eye exam.
That was fine(no bifocals yet!) We went out for breakfast because we knew lunch was
not an option. My hubby had an appointment at 11:45 and my surgery was scheduled for 12:30. However, my doctor was working at the hospital and I would be called as to the exact time. I was called and told 1P.M. tentatively. Frank got out at 1 and we arrived at my appointment at 1:15 only to discover my doctor would not be back until
3:15 and did I want to reschedule which I most certainly did not! So we went to the mall and wandered around! We went for a drink to fortify ourselves and headed back.
We stopped at Frank's doctors for his x-rays because he's going for a nuclear bone scan this week! Oh boy! Anyway, I went in was very brave and took the needle in my face
without protest. I was praying, and when I wasn't praying, I was talking. It was just a weird feeling of tugging on my skin. I had the weird frozen eyebrow again and more of a swollen cheek than before. We got home by 4, and I camped out on the couch.
Frank warmed up dinner and I ate and later watched most of the new Sound of Music
which I thought was pretty good! I had to leave the bandage on for 24 hours, and was
surprised when I saw the number of stitches. There must be 10-12!
Anyway, I get them out tomorrow and I know that will not hurt. Don't forget about my exercise class at Harwich Community Center at 5:30 tonight and Wednesday, 2 classes/$15.00. Have a great week!

Pre and Post Thanksgiving and skin Ocancer
On November 20th I had to get some skin cancer removed from my face. It's called basil cell carcinoma. So I went in to the office and the Doctor outlined the area he needed to cut and gave me a needle to numb the area. The needle really hurt, but the rest did not. I ended up with six stitches and a partly numb face. It was really weird
because my right eyebrow would not move! Anyway I could take the bandage off in
24 hours and it felt O.K. I had to go back in a week to get the stitches removed, only to find out the margins were not clear. So I have to be cut again this week. The Doctor said I could wait until after the holidays, but I want it over and done with now!
I also celebrated a birthday, and we went away. I ate some fried food and had a little more wine than usual. So when I got back, I cut back a little on the calories and I was
in good shape. I also want to make note that a week before I was at my ultimate high
probably due to the stress and some Chinese food that we ate.(too much sodium!)
So I got a little freaked out but didn't let it ruin my birthday! In the old days, a bad number on the scale could ruin my life and the lives of all the people around me too!
Thanksgiving was nice. We spent it with family. My stepdaughter Kate cooked a Turkey, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce(so much better than canned!) I brought
stuffing, rolls, peas, and some wine. My sister-in-law brought squash, sweet potatoes
and an apple pie. Kate also made this great corn dish which was delicious!
I had a long walk with my friend on Thanksgiving morning so I had my exercise.
Friday A.M. I had a dead battery, so we had to deal with that. Oh well, that's what
credit cards are for!
Saturday was Pilates and Yoga. We also had a nice walk on the beach! Sunday was church and we saw the new Judy Dench movie "Philomena". It was great and a true
story. We went to Chapins for their end of the year party and had dinner. There was lots of free food, but I stayed with salad and protein. It was fun!
I'm offering a special for my class at Harwich Community Center Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 P.M. two classes for $15.00 three weeks in December for $45.00!
So come on over and de-stress for the holidays!
Have a great week!

Veteran's Day and cooking.
Thank you to all the Veterans who fought for our Country! My hubby went to a
ceremony this morning and we will be going to Johnny Kelly Park this afternoon to
look at the American flags there.
This weekend had Pilates, Yoga cleaning and grocery shopping. We went to Orleans to pick up payment for our entertainment for The Rowley Art Gallery in the form of a
beautiful piece of art done by Peg Reynolds called " Walking to the Atlantic," Just a
peaceful beach setting in beautiful blues. Really gorgeous! We took a walk on Fort Hill in Eastham. It was a little windy and cold, but the views were terrific!
We came home at around 4 and started cooking. My hubby cut up onions and peppers for the eggplant parmesan . I egged and breaded the eggplant and cooked it in the broiler instead of frying in oil which cuts down on the calories. I also used fat free feta cheese in the layers along with the veggies and tomato sauce. It was topped off with
50% light sharp cheese. I also cooked a boneless pork tenderloin in the microwave and
we had broccoli with a little cheese and some sweet potato chips that we broiled.
Oh, I forgot to mention I made up for the extra calories I totally enjoyed at the party last week and weighed in at my lightest ever! Which makes me wonder if I'm loosing bone density in my hips. So I'm adding squats and bridging to my exercise routine.
My Mom had two hip replacements and I was in a bad car accident in my twenties and suffered a pelvic fracture. So I have some problems in that area.
Sunday was a day for singing and praising which is quite appropriate. After church,
we headed over to Epoch in Brewster to sing! Frank and I both play guitar and sing.
We do a variety of Irish/American Folk music and have fun while we're doing it!
The folks there were quite appreciative. So after singing for an hour and hauling equipment back and forth, we forced ourselves into taking a walk down the bike trail.
We rewarded ourselves with a drink at our favorite watering hole "The All American."
It started to downpour 10 minutes after our walk, so we made it just in time.
We got home and I put together a squash pie. Which really isn't hard since I buy the crust. It takes about 10 min. to prepare and an hour to cook. I always make one crust pies with stevia which cuts down on the calories. I also used a liquid egg substitute.
Hopefully all the fake stuff won't kill me!
Today is Veteran's Day so the Harwich Community Center is closed. I'm not having a Wed. class on the 13th of this month or the 20th, but if you and a friend would like to try a Monday class on the 18th of this month, give me a call at 774-994-0061.

Giving Thanks
I had such a great week last week that I really feel I must say thank you. I really do believe in prayer so the first thanks goes to God. I'm not being preachy, I just believe.
So, last week I won some money which was very cool! Then I figured out I hadn't recorded a deposit, so I found money!(yeah) Two of my twice a month clients became weekly. So I make more money there, and I straightened out my retirement issues.
I'm taking my retirement from teaching for 23 years. It's really 25, but I can't claim some of it.
As far as fitness is concerned, I did Pilates on Saturday and my yoga class. You've got to try The Majsah Center on rt. 137 in E. Harwich next to Consigning Women.
The 10:30 class on Sat. is great! Francie is the instructor, and she is really great. She also teaches on Tues. evening at 6:30. I came home, had lunch and cleaned. Then we got ready to go to a surprise birthday party for my friend. We brought our guitars and played some music which is always fun! There was plenty of food, dips, cheese, chocolate and all kinds of bad stuff. It's a good thing I weighed in light this week, almost a half pound because I made up for it! The birthday cake was a 5 layer German
chocolate with whipped cream icing and cherries! I figured I did 400 calories in damage. Boy was it good! So I have to cut down by 100 calories each day.
I started on Sunday and took a walk. We stopped by our favorite pub and he was having a free buffet because he's closing. I had three shrimp,1 mussel and a half of a mozzarella stick(fried). I try not to deprive myself, just cut down. That way I don't pig out latter. We had chicken for dinner with green beans and I had 3 Ounces of my slow churned ice cream. I will cut down by 100 calories today, Tuesday and Wednesday. I am walking for an hour with my friend today, will walk tomorrow probably for a half hour and will at least teach my class on Wednesday which is Aerobic and is at Harwich Community Center at 5:30. Why don't you join me?
Have a great week and don't forget to say THANK YOU!

Surviving going out for dinner, grandkids and a birthday party.
I hope I'm not coming off as a big know it all. That is not my intent. I'm just sharing what works for me, and I hope others can benefit from my experience.
This past Friday we were taken out to dinner by a really good friend. We had oysters for appetizers, which should give you a clue where we went. We had wine with the meal and I had swordfish with a double vegetable. However I had a roll and a half with butter and took a few bites of chocolate lava cake yum! So I figured out on my food log that I over did by 200 calories. So Saturday and Sunday I would have to eat
200 calories less. 100 less on each day(including drinks!)
Saturday, I did pilates and went to a fabulous yoga class at the Masjah Center on Rt.
137 in E. Harwich right next to consigning women. I had to leave a bit early to get lunch at Stop and Shop. I got salad for me and a small turkey sandwich for my hubby.
I got chicken and a little feta on it for protein and had a handful of veggie crisps. We
(The O'DeMellos) played music at The Orleans Community Center from 2-4 to help promote The Rowley Art Gallery and the artist Peg Reynolds who is very good! Also,
hopefully promote ourselves. We had a great time and got home by 5, unloaded and started to cook hamburgers and hot dogs for the grandkids. I made a salad and the kids had burgers and dogs and I had a burger with a little cheese and a big salad.
We made s'mores inside under the broiler(carefully!) I had some slow churn ice cream in a Dixie cup.
Sunday was a breakfast using egg beaters, spinach, peppers ,mushroom and cheese
omlette with toasted pita bread for me. We went to church and had a light lunch of salad with cottage cheese and half a cheese stick for me and a small handful of veggie chips. We went for a walk (about 40 min.) and stopped at a pub to watch the Patriots and wet our whistles. I had a Bloody Mary. Then it was off to a birthday party.
We arrived to kids carving pumpkins which was fun! There were crackers and dip which I did indulge in with control and pizza. I had one piece and some fruit with a few more crackers and dip on the way by.(those carbs get you every time!) I drank water and coffee (lucky for me there was no wine!) There was cake(pound cake) I
had a small piece with a little chocolate ice cream. The birthday girl got another
American Girl Doll(Laura I think), rainbow bands and a loom! It was only a two hour party, but I was pooped! We stopped at Market Basket on the way home and had a nice relaxing evening!

The Weekend
Well I did my usual weigh in on Saturday am and I stayed the same, Yeah! I added an extra 20 minutes on the elyptical on Friday and cut down my calories by 100, thus making up for the fried food I had at Rock Harbor on Thursday. Delicious and worth every calorie! I did my usual pilates on Sat. and went for a walk on the bike trail for probably a mile and a half. Then I did regular shopping and cleaning chores.
We had a quiet evening at home by the fire which was nice!
Sunday was church and later on we played music at a musical tribute for our friend Paul who passed away this summer. In between, we went to a wake of one of my former clients. It is not the most fun thing to do, but I was glad I went because there were not that many people there.
Afterwards, we took a mile walk on the beach and went home. I made some gingerbread which we had with slow churn mint chocolate chip ice cream(yum).
I made up for that by taking an hour walk with my friend and cutting down on the calories again. Don't forget about my exercise class at Harwich Community Center at 5:30 on Wednesday this week!

How to Stay in Shape While on Vacation
My husband and I just recently returned from a road trip to
Canada. It was a 600 mile trip and it
took ten hours to drive there. In case
you’ve ever wondered how to stay in shape while on vacation and doing so much
sitting, here’s how I kept fit. We started
out at four in the morning. My husband
drove the first leg. We stopped at the
end of the Mass. Turnpike for breakfast at McDonalds. Now you may think “YUK!”, but it actually
wasn’t that bad! I had an Egg white
Mcmuffin for only 250 calories. All the
nutritional information was on the wrapper.
It had only 7 grams of fat, 18 grams of protein and 32 carbs because of
the English muffin.
We stopped at 9 for a pit stop and to change drivers. I had water with me, but tried not to drink
as much as I usually do for obvious reasons.
I drove into Canada and we went through Customs. You have to have a Passport and the guard
asks you where you are visiting and for how long. I drove over two bridges (a real
accomplishment for me because I’m not a big fan!) They
were single lane and quite steep!
YIKES! But I made it!
I drove to Kingston, and we found a place for lunch. We both had Caesar Salads (mine with the
dressing on the side). It came with a
Scotch egg which is an egg which is hard boiled and deep fried. Anyway it was an egg and it had protein! I also had a well-deserved glass of red wine
and 16 ounces of water. We took a little
walk after lunch for about 15-20 minutes which gave us a little exercise. We got in the car and drove another two hours. My hubby finished the drive.
We arrived at our destination at four in the afternoon. We got ourselves settled at my cousin’s house
and sat to chat before dinner. Let me
point out these are my Irish cousins and they have potatoes at most meals! The good thing is my cousin sets up buffet
style so you control your portions. I
always took the smallest potato. Now I
could have not taken any at all, but I’m Irish and really like potatoes! I did watch my wine intake and had a few more
than usual which I noted in my food log in the morning. I keep a food log and note protein (60-80
grams), carbs(60-80 grams), fat(20 grams), and fiber(20 grams).
We went out for breakfast every day and after the second
morning, I did poached egg and toast. We
skipped lunch a few times, which I know isn’t the best, but it worked out
calorie wise. We also walked two days
for a half hour the first day and 45 minutes the next. They had a party in our honor on Saturday and
I did behave and had a small piece of blueberry pie with fresh picked
blueberries yum! I try not to eat sweets,
but I do treat myself every once and a while.
On Sunday, we went for breakfast again and I did a poached
egg and toast. Just two pieces (my hubby
always has the other two)! We did some
sightseeing and saw some beautiful foliage and three Blue Herons! Really cool!
Dinner again had potatoes, but I picked a small one and had plenty of
veggies and salad!
Monday we headed for home and had a good breakfast. I had one egg, a few fried potatoes and toast,
We drove 8 hours through a horrendous rain storm, but made it to Massachusetts
by 4PM.
.
Dinner that night consisted of swordfish, double broccoli
and a salad. I was almost home and back
on track eating correctly. I weighed in
on Saturday and had not gained weight!
So that’s how I manage my life and weight. I hope this helps someone out who may be
struggling,
